The tragic events that unfolded on that Monday morning in Winston-Salem are one of those moments. What began as a gathering of young people—lives still unfolding, futures still unwritten—ended in unimaginable loss.

Today, we pause to remember two young souls taken far too soon: Erubey Romero Medina, 17, and Daniel Jimenez Millian, 16.

Erubey and Daniel were more than victims of a senseless act of violence. They were sons, friends, classmates—young men with laughter in their voices, dreams in their hearts, and stories that deserved to be told over a lifetime, not cut short in an instant. Their presence mattered. Their lives mattered.

In the quiet spaces left behind, their absence echoes deeply. Families grieve not only the loss of who they were, but of who they were becoming. There are birthdays that will go uncelebrated, milestones that will never be reached, and futures that will remain only in imagination. No words can truly hold the weight of that kind of sorrow.

This tragedy also leaves a wider circle of pain. Five others were injured—young lives forever impacted, carrying both physical and emotional scars from that day. And beyond them, an entire community now bears the burden of grief, fear, and reflection.

What makes this loss even more heartbreaking is how it began—not with strangers, but with a planned conflict among youth. A moment of anger, a decision made in haste, escalated into irreversible devastation. It is a stark and painful reminder of how quickly lives can change, how fragile life truly is, and how urgently understanding, guidance, and compassion are needed in the lives of young people.

As we remember Erubey and Daniel, let us not define them by how they died, but by the fact that they lived. Let us honor their memory by speaking their names with love, by holding their families in our thoughts, and by striving for a world where no family has to endure such pain.

May their souls rest in peace.

May their families find strength in the midst of unimaginable grief.

And may their memory be a call—for unity, for awareness, and for change.

Gone too soon, but never forgotten.

In Loving Memory of Erubey Romero Medina & Daniel Jimenez Millian There are moments in life that shake entire communities—moments that leave hearts heavy, questions unanswered, and families forever changed.
